Renewing your driver’s license is a fairly simple procedure. The entire process should be quick and painless, provided you have the necessary documents and identification.
Here is a simple guide on how to renew drivers licenses in the state of Georgia.
First Time Licenses
To get your first driver’s license in GA, you must be 16 years old, or 17 years old if you have not successfully completed a driver’s education course and been approved for a driver’s permit.
Where To Renew Your Driver’s License
A Georgia driver’s license can be renewed in online, in person or by mail.
You must renew it in person if any of the following conditions apply:
- You are 64 years old or older. (You will need to take a vision test.)
- You are renewing your license for the first time since July 1, 2012.
- Your license has been expired for more than 2 years. (You need to take various tests first at a DMV office.)
Requirements For Online Renewal
If you have a Secure ID driver’s license (as indicated by a gold star in the top right hand corner of the license,) you are eligible for the online renewal option.
To renew online, you will need the following information: your social security number, full legal name, date of birth, driver’s license number, the issue date of your original license and the class of license that you hold.
First, create a DDS online account on the Department Of Driver Services Website Log into the account and follow the website’s instructions on renewing your license.
You will also need a debit card or credit card to pay the renewal fee for your driver’s license.
Renewing Your License In Person
To renew your driver’s license in person, you must provide documents to prove your identity, your social security number and your residence. You will need any one item from each of the following lists.
Documents to prove ID:
- A valid US passport
- A US birth certificate
- A certificate of US citizenship
Documents to prove your SS number:
- Social security card
- A W-2 form
- A social security statement
Documents to prove residency in GA:
- A rental agreement
- Bank statements
- Utility or other bills
If you have a legal name change since your license was issued, you will also need to provide the DDS with proof of this change using documents such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or a court order.
Renewing Your License By Mail
You may only renew your GA driver’s license by mail if you are out of state due to any of the following circumstances: stationed military, student, employment or you are the dependent spouse of anyone who fits one of those. You may also renew by mail if you are disabled and unable to do so in person.
To renew by mail, you must complete a mail-in renewal package, available on the DDS website.
Cost Of License Renewal
The renewal fee for a standard driver’s license is $32. If you renew online, there is a $5 discount.
How Often Do you Renew?
Georgia driver’s licenses are good for eight years. It is wise to remember to renew your license every eight years before the expiration date goes by, however you can renew a valid license up to two years after it expires.
You may also renew it 150 days before the expiration date.
