Registering Vehicle From Out Of State

Of all the anticipated hassles that moving to another state entails, navigating the bureaucratic entanglement that is the DMV is on the top of everyone’s “Most Dreaded” list. Rest assured, show up missing a single scrap of paper and it’s another day wasted waiting in a line that never seems to move. To ensure the least painful experience, one should be equipped with all of the forms and information required for the purpose of his or her visit. In the state of Georgia, the County Tag Office where the vehicle owner lives handles motor vehicle registration.

These items are necessary to obtain a title, which is required to register out of state vehicle:

Form MV-1 DOR

  • Proof of Insurance–This can be filed directly into the Tag Office’s database by the insurance company or provided by the vehicle owner.

T-17 Statement of Title Held by Lienholder, Security Interest Holder, or Leasing Company

  • T-17 Statement of Title Held by Lienholder, Security Interest Holder, or Leasing Company if the vehicle is financed or leased. This is essentially a VIN verification.
  • Emissions Inspection Certificate for any vehicle model year 1993-2015 being registered in the following counties: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, Coweta, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Paulding or Rockdale (vehicles older than 25 years and vehicles within the most recent 3 model years are exempt from emissions inspections, even in these counties)Additionally, vehicles that operate strictly using natural gas, propane, battery electricity, or hydrogen are exempt from emissions testing. Hybrid vehicles, bi-fuel, and flex-fuel vehicles are not exempt.

Arriving at the County Tag Office with these items in hand is a sure way to expedite the motor vehicle registration process. It is important to note that in most cases, the title is required to register the vehicle. And, that while these are standard requirements for most passenger vehicles (car’s light trucks, SUVs, minivans) there are exceptions for trailers, boats, planes, agricultural/horticultural equipment, mopeds, public transit vehicles, ATVs and vehicles produced during or before model year 1962.
