So you are moving. I am sure there is a checklist of things you need to accomplish to ensure the move goes as smoothly as possible. This list includes, but definitely is not limited to, renting moving trucks or possibly the hire of professional movers, having your utilities changed over to the new address, transferring the kids to a new school or district, or even picking out furniture for the new place. No matter how big the move the list may seem endless. There is one thing, however, that people most commonly forget to add to the list. They forget to submit a change of address form with the Georgia Department of Driver’s Services (DDS) when they move to update their drivers license or GA id.
The state of Georgia requires that when moving a change of address form be submitted within 60 days of your move. This can simply be done by going to your local DDS office to file in person. When filing in person remember to bring two forms or documents of id that show proof of the new residency. This can be a bank statement, utility or phone bill, as well as, documentation from your school. This is even easier if you have a Georgia Secure Drivers License or id, which only requires one form of address documentation.
Changing your address can also be done online from the comfort of your new home. To utilize the service the applicant must be a resident of the state, as well as, a citizen of the United States, and have an online service account on or after June 1, 2013. Somethings to make note of is if the applicant carries a GA CDL (commercial driver’s license) they can not renew their license online.
The fee to change the address on any drivers license and ID’s in the state of Georgia is $32. Applicants will receive a $5 discount if they submit their address change request online through the state DDS website. This fee is waived altogether if the applicant has not changed their address within the eight-year term of their drivers license or id and they are at least 150 days before their renewal date. The DDS accepts multiple payment methods to renew including cash, check, money order, and debit/credit cards bearing the Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express logos.
Georgia will send out the new card within 10 business days of submitting all required information. If for any reason the DL has been suspended, canceled, or revoked, the state will not allow an address change. In the event that one of the aforementioned incidents has occurred, applicants are still permitted to change their GA id. If the applicant does not possess a GA id they must apply for one at a fee of $32. Also, remember GA gives 30 days after the address change to have the title on any vehicle owned changed to the new address as well. This may be done in person or in some counties by mail.
